Not all breast forms are created equal, and we know you have questions. Well, the experts are here to answer.
As experts in the area of custom breast forms, we get a lot of questions from our patients and their families about what to do post-mastectomy. Here, we have compiled a list of the top questions that we hear when we meet with women, and the answers that we would like all of you to know.
1. “Why did my doctor not give me this as an option?”
Good question! Honest answer? We really do not know. We wish that we could tell every woman who has undergone a mastectomy about our products, which is why we try to spread the word as much as we can. A lot of doctors mention traditional off-the-shelf breast forms and breast reconstruction as an option for mastectomy patients, but we hope to make ContourMed’s custom breast forms one of the first options mentioned when you are considering what to do post-mastectomy.
2. “Why does it cost so much?”
The cost of our breast forms has a lot to do with the advanced technology that is required to create them; not only this, they are also made by hand exactly to your measurements. Our patented Symmetry Scanner takes precise measurements of your surgical site and we then create a custom breast form based on your measurements. Each breast form is hand-crafted in our headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas. The men and women who create these forms are more than just fabricators—they are true artists who create forms of different size, color, nipple and areola shape based on your specifications. The customization of our breast forms is unlike anything that you can find “off-the-shelf.”
3. “Will I need another prosthesis for swimming?”
Absolutely not. In fact, we encourage you to please continue doing all of the water activities that you love, all while wearing your ContourMed custom breast prosthesis. Our prostheses are non-porous, meaning that they are waterproof and perfect for water activities like swimming (or just lounging by the pool!). You should, however, plan to wear a secure-fitting, high-necked swimsuit—the security of your swim top will determine how secure your breast forms are when you do water activities.
4. “As a bilateral mastectomy patient, can I choose a different size than before surgery?”
With custom breast forms, you have the freedom to choose a different size than your original breasts. Our job is simply to ensure that you have a secure, accurate fit to your surgical site. The size of your prosthetic breasts is up to you, and we are happy to accommodate your requests. Not only this, we also offer various styles, colors, shapes, weights, and textures to help you get the look that you want.
5. “How long will this process take from beginning to end?”
The initial scan with our Symmetry Scan technology takes only a few minutes. After that, we will help you to select the style, colors, and customizations for your breast forms. Altogether, this process takes a minimum of about thirty minutes. From there, we aim to have your custom breast form on your doorstep within six weeks. Of course, there are always extenuating factors that contribute to the time that it takes, but a six-week timeframe is our goal.
6. “I’ve heard you can wear a custom without a bra, is that true?”
We do not advise women to wear our custom prosthetic breasts without a bra. While it is true that the optional magnetic attachment system can secure your prosthesis to your chest wall, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to wear your prostheses “bra-less” and have no issues. You should wear your breast forms with a non-underwire bra.
