The first step in making custom breast forms starts with understanding the unique needs of the patient.
ContourMed became the first medical technology companyto develop and launch a patented process for creating custom breast forms. Instead of using plaster casts (now mostly a thing of the past), we introduced scanning technology to create digital images of your surgical site and the symmetry that you want to achieve. These images then become your model for the fabrication process, where your prosthesis is artfully fabricated (not mass produced) to fit your unique body scan.
In our series on how custom breast forms are made, we will explore the entire process from the initial scan to the final fitting. Let’s start with the capture process, where a technician performs a personalized scan and helps you select the best prosthesis option for your body. The days of “one-size-fits-many” are over. With our four custom breast form product lines to choose from, your customization options are endless with ContourMed.
The Technology We Use
Symmetry Scan™ by ContourMed is the next evolution of easy-to-use scanning technology. While we were the first in the industry to use 3D scanning, this newly launched platform makes the process easy, mobile, and comprehensive. It significantly reduces the time required by our retail partners and patients to take the first step in getting their custom forms.
Making Custom Breast Forms Starts with a Scan
To create a beautiful and functional custom breast form, there are three critical componets that all have to be combined: your surgical site, your symmetry (slope, drape, volume), and your movements. Our scanning platform quickly and easily captures the first two. Your interview with your fitter in the selection of the type of custom form, and various fitting options, complete the first step. Two scans will be performed (one while wearing a bra and one without) along with various photographs to assure symmetry. These images are then transmitted via secure Wi-Fi (fully HIPAA compliant) to our fabrication facility.
For perfect alignment, the scanning software registers off of unique markers placed on your body prior to scanning. The markers are typically tiny dots that can be identified by the proprietary software. From beginning to end, the whole process should take less than 30 minutes with the majority of the time discussing your many product and feature options with our custom breast forms.
Symmetry, comfort, freedom of movement, weight, and lifestyle are all critical aspects to consider when deciding on the right custom breast form for you. We serve many patients who have had a lumpectomy, mastectomy, or failed reconstruction and symmetry is critical. For others, the ability to swim, run, bike, and play sports like tennis drives the choice. If a unilateral mastectomy is performed, our scanning platform allows the opportunity to effectively match your intact breast either through the fitting process or by digitally flipping the scan. Perfect registration is achieved with the markers allowing for perfect registration of your surgical site to the exact front of the custom breast form you design.
Your Breast Form Customization Options
Our custom breast forms come in a variety of skin tone options, nipple and areola designs, and colors to match your intact breast. Depending on which product line you choose, you also have varying options on skin texture and prosthesis weight. During your scan, the mastectomy fitter will ask you which of the options you prefer. When paired with the scanned measurements of your unique chest wall, your choices help us create a truly custom prosthesis made to help you feel like yourself again.
